Gabon became an IOM Member State on 9 June 2005. It falls under the purview of the IOM Regional Office for Central and West Africa in Dakar, Senegal.

IOM Gabon supports the Gabonese government in the management of migration issues in general and more specifically the management of migration flows, mixed population movements and migration governance. IOM is also working on the return and reintegration of migrants, minors in reception centers as well as adult migrants.

Between 2020 and 2021, IOM organized the return and reintegration of 143 migrants who are mostly victims of trafficking. In addition, IOM Gabon's work supports the Government of Gabon through its participation in the development and implementation of the 2023-2027 UN Development Cooperation Framework in Gabon and works to create momentum around achieving the goals of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). IOM's interventions in Gabon also contribute to the government's strategies and objectives (Gabon Emerging Strategic Plan) IOM Gabon also serves as liaison office with the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) whose Commission is seated in Libreville, Gabon.

Through a dedicated MIRAC project, IOM is providing capacity building and technical support to the ECCAS Commission. One of the objectives is the strengthening of the Regional Consultative Mechanism on Migration of ECCAS, the Migration Dialogue for Central African States (MIDCAS), which allows focused discussion among ECCAS Member States on migration matters and enhancement of migration policy development in the region. As part of its regional perspective, IOM Gabon serves as focal office in the establishment of a regional Web of Migration Lawyers.
