Conakry, Guinea – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is proud to announce on January 31, 2024, the expansion of its Africa Regional Migration Program (ARMP)  to Guinea, thereby reinforcing its commitment to addressing the diverse migratory challenges prevalent in the region. This strategic initiative aligns seamlessly with the overall goal of the IOM to promote safe, orderly, and humane migration management.

Guinea, like many West African countries, confronts numerous migration challenges associated with environmental degradation and climate change. In response to these issues, it is imperative to implement robust measures to prepare for and respond to disasters, thereby reducing associated risks. The ARMP focuses on enhancing the capacities of host governments and civil society to support the resilience of local communities. Its primary objective is to strengthen migration governance, promote partnerships, and enhance preparedness for crises. This program will enhance the coordination and cooperation of governments in addressing migration challenges and leveraging multiple opportunities associated with well-managed migration for both migrants and host societies.

During the launch ceremony, the Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Guinea, His Excellency Mr. Fitrell, welcomed this development by stating: “We are thrilled to have IOM and via the ARMP working on humane migration management within Guinea and for the Guinea people.  This work will build on existing coordination on the cross cutting theme of migration and mobility, with a focus the nexus of climate and migration.  As I wrote in my New Year’s letter, the U.S. government’s investment in Guinea remains unwavering and I am happy to announce this further contribution and collaboration for a resilient and vibrant Guinea.”

This year, through ARMP, IOM will support the Republic of Guinea in disaster management and the reduction of associated risks. This program aims to increase the knowledge and capacities of the Government and relevant actors to better anticipate, prepare, and effectively respond to migratory flows in emergency and humanitarian crisis situations. This strategic approach aligns perfectly with the overall goal of the Guinean government's national program, as emphasized by Mory CONDE, the Minister of Administration of the Territory and Decentralization in his speech.

"I am delighted to see the integration of the migration dimension into our local development plan. Highlighting migrants as the most vulnerable group in case of disaster underscores the crucial importance of their protection. This attests to our commitment to an inclusive society, where every individual, particularly migrants, is considered in our development initiatives and in strengthening resilience to disaster risks."

IOM's Africa Regional Migration Program in Guinea strengthens the participation of institutions and communities, yielding tangible results for effective migration management in times of disasters. It provides training and technical assistance, promoting a coordinated approach to overcome migration challenges. IOM thus contributes to sustainable development in Guinea and enhances local resilience.

"We anticipate a collaborative effort with Guinean authorities and essential national and international partners, focusing on supporting communities in need, strengthening disaster management capacity, and protecting migrants in emergencies," emphasized Ana Fonseca, Chief of Mission at IOM Guinea.

This program is funded by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the United States Department of State.
