New Dohouba Border Post Boosts Côte d'Ivoire's Migration Management

Dohouba, 3 July 2024 - A new border post in Dohouba, Côte d'Ivoire, established by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and funded by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, aims to significantly enhance the country's migration and border management capabilities.

This initiative, part of the "Strengthening the Operational Capacities of the Ivorian Government in Migration and Border Management" (CIVIT) project, focuses on improving border infrastructure, training personnel, and fostering international cooperation to tackle irregular migration and transnational crime.

"This project symbolizes the solid cooperation between Italy and Côte d'Ivoire in addressing migration and security challenges,” said the Italian Minister of Interior, Matteo Piantedosi. “This activity is part of a series of initiatives that reinforce our growing partnership, confirmed by recent exchanges of high-level visits, in particular the visit in Côte d’Ivoire of the President of the Republic, as well as the partnership agreements signed with Côte d'Ivoire. We are proud to contribute to these efforts for more effective and secure border management."

The Dohouba border post, along with three other new installations, is equipped to support the Border Police in managing migration flows, combating human trafficking, and preventing migrant smuggling. These enhancements are expected to bolster security and stability in the region, facilitating safer and more efficient population movements.

"The commissioning of this border post is a crucial step in strengthening security and stability in this strategic region,” said Côte d'Ivoire’s Minister for Interior and Security General Vagondo Diomandé hailing the shared vision between the two countries for a more secure and prosperous future. “We thank our Italian partners and IOM for their continued support."

"IOM is committed to supporting Côte d'Ivoire in its efforts to improve migration management and strengthen border security,” said David Preux, IOM Chief of Mission in Côte d'Ivoire. “This border post is a concrete example of our commitment to ensuring safer population flows, promoting cross-border cooperation, and enhancing the positive impact of migration on the country's development. It also reflects our dedication to protecting the human rights of migrants and providing support to those in vulnerable situations."
