13 October 2024, Kamsar, Guinea - the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Guinea, with support from the Italian Cooperation Agency for Development (AICS), has launched an exciting new internship program aimed at boosting youth employment in Kamsar’s artisanal fishing industry. Designed for graduates of the local maritime school, this initiative will offer hands-on experience to young professionals eager to put their skills into practice in one of the region’s most vital economic sectors.

Kamsar plays a crucial role in Guinea's fishing sector, serving as a hub for both local and international fishing activities due to its rich marine resources and strategic coastal location. The town not only provides significant employment opportunities but also contributes to food security and the livelihoods of many families in the region. At the heart of this initiative is a strategic partnership with Oceanic Pêche, a leading fishing company in Kamsar.

As part of a six-month pilot phase, the program will welcome 10 interns who will gain practical experience in areas such as operations, management, and sustainability practices. This partnership bridges the gap between education and employment, giving young graduates a rare opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting. The program is expected to expand, building on the success of this initial phase and potentially shaping the future of youth employment in the sector.

«IOM places youth employment at the heart of its action. This internship programme is a practical opportunity for young graduates to acquire hands-on skills, while contributing to the sustainable development of the maritime sector in Guinea.» said Donghyuk Park, Programme Manager at IOM Guinea.

Oceanic Pêche’s involvement demonstrates the crucial role of private sector engagement in driving sustainable development. By welcoming these interns, the company is not only investing in the professional growth of the next generation but also in the future of Guinea’s fishing industry. Through this partnership, the interns will gain market-relevant skills and exposure to the industry’s latest practices, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to both the industry’s growth and the sustainable management of marine resources.

This internship initiative forms part of a larger three-year project, "Promoting Intraregional Labour Migration for Local Development in West African Countries." The project aims to enhance socio-economic development and mobility for youth in rural and border regions across The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea. Supported by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, this effort underscores the critical importance of international collaboration in addressing the challenges of youth unemployment and migration, while aligning with broader efforts to boost youth employability and regional economic growth.

IOM’s leadership in implementing this program showcases the power of strategic partnerships between international organizations and private businesses in addressing critical challenges like rising unemployment and irregular migration. By collaborating with companies like Oceanic Pêche, IOM ensures that youth receive the skills and hands-on experience they need to succeed in the workforce, while simultaneously strengthening key industries such as fishing, which are vital to the local economy. This initiative serves as a model for how targeted collaboration can create real career pathways for young people.

By investing in youth development, fostering private sector engagement, and aligning skills with market needs, the program not only helps young professionals secure stable futures but also contributes to the sustainable development of their communities. Furthermore, this project supports Guinea's national employment policies and youth employment strategies, which have recently been validated, aligning with the government's efforts to combat unemployment and empower the youth.
