Statement by IOM West and Central Africa on Valletta Summit Anniversary – 11-12 November 2018

Valletta Summit Anniversary – 11 November 2018

International Organization for Migration (IOM) – Richard Danziger
Migration is becoming an increasingly complex phenomenon bringing important challenges for both African and European governments. In West and Central Africa more people are on the move than at any other time in recorded history. Three years ago, for the first time ever, the European Union, the African Union and their Member States came together to find a common way to manage these challenges. Political dialogue and partnerships are undoubtedly needed to ensure that the most vulnerable migrants are protected and assisted along the migratory routes. But this is not enough.
Building walls, setting rigid visa regimes and criminalizing irregular migration are driving more and more migrants into the hands of smugglers rather than curbing irregular migration. More needs to be done to facilitate mobility in a humane and dignified way.
Three years after the Summit, what is still to be done?
Coming together in spirit of partnership was one important step to improve migration management. Providing more channels for safe and legal migration as well as creating more opportunities in countries of origin should be the next ones.
